Promoting sustainable livelihoods and biodiversity conservation through community-led eco-tourism and integrated tribal development in ecologically sensitive landscapes.
The tribal regions of Karbi Anglong in Assam are rich in biodiversity and cultural heritage, yet face persistent challenges including limited livelihood opportunities, ecological degradation, and increasing pressure on natural resources. The absence of structured, sustainable economic models often leads to overdependence on forests, contributing to habitat loss and escalating human–wildlife conflict.
To address this, CSGE is developing an integrated development project aimed at aligning conservation goals with community well-being. The initiative focuses on creating sustainable, community-driven livelihood systems through eco-tourism while preserving ecological integrity and strengthening local governance. By placing communities at the centre of conservation, the project seeks to build a model that is both inclusive and environmentally resilient.
CSGE is working with a multidisciplinary and participatory approach, combining field insights with strategic planning to design interventions such as:
- Development of community-based eco-tourism models
- Promotion of forest-based and traditional livelihood practices
- Capacity building in hospitality, conservation, and micro-enterprise development
- Strengthening of local governance and community participation
- Identification of eco-tourism zones using GIS and spatial analysis
- Sustainable Livelihood enhancement of the local people including living on forest fringe areas
Through this initiative, CSGE created a framework that transforms conservation from a constraint into an economic opportunity for local communities. The project enhances income generation, reduces pressure on natural ecosystems, and strengthens community stewardship of biodiversity. By integrating ecological sustainability with socio-economic development, CSGE demonstrates its ability to deliver scalable, Nature-Based Solutions that balance environmental protection with long-term economic resilience.
